Practice Experience

Dr Roberto Rios Herrán has been practising law for more than twenty-five years. Prior to joining Appleton Luff, Roberto was director of legal studies and research at the World Trade Institute in Bern, Switzerland.

After qualification, Dr Roberto Rios Herrán worked as a lawyer for a major oil and engineering construction company in Mexico after which he joined Baker & McKenzie. Working in both the firm’s Warsaw office and its European law centre in Brussels, Roberto’s practice was focused on infrastructure projects, mergers and acquisitions, energy, EU and World Trade Organization matters, and has worked in more than 30 countries in Africa, Europe, the CIS, the Middle East and Latin America.

Dr Roberto Rios Herrán is an outside expert of the US Department of Commerce. Roberto has been recognised in the International Who’s Who of Trade and Customs Lawyers since the year 2007.
In addition to work for clients, Dr Roberto Rios Herrán writes and lectures internationally on energy, competition law and WTO related issues. He is a visiting professor at HEC in France, Instituto de Empresa and IELPO in Spain, WTI in Switzerland, TRAPCA in Arusha, Tanzania, and Capital University in the USA.

He is also a member of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE), the European Society of International Law, the International Economic Law Interest Group, the International Bar Association, the Polish Competition Law Association, and a registered international lawyer at the Warsaw Chamber of Legal Advisors.
Dr Roberto Rios Herrán specializes in international trade matters, EU Competition Law (with emphasis on State Aid) and government procurement.

Education

He is a graduate of the University of Nuevo Leon, Monterrey, Mexico where he studied law and holds a masters degree in Public Administration from the American University, Washington D.C. and a LLM and a Ph. D in law from the Sorbonne University in Paris.
