The Appleton Luff East African office headquartered in Kampala, Uganda was established in 2014. The office focuses on providing the following legal services:
Trade: Leverage the firm’s expertise and presence in the major trade capitals (Geneva, Brussels, Singapore and Washington, DC) to advise private and public entities based in the East African region on trade matters. We focus on relationships with the East African Community Secretariat (in Arusha), the Common Market for East, Central and Southern Africa Secretariat (in Lusaka), as well as with key trade ministries, and private entities. We work with international investors interested in understanding the local context and multilateral agreements supporting Africa’s participation in the multilateral trading environment – through technical assistance and training.
Advisory Services: The firm advises international corporations on contract management and dispute resolution, and provides advice on investment in the East African region. Clients have included SGS (Geneva), Carnegie Mellon University, Dewey Lebouef, and other international firms.
Arbitration: The head of the East African Office, has served as an ICC arbitrator for investor-state disputes in the East African region, and was recently appointed as an ICSID arbitrator on a major investor-state dispute involving Kenya.
